Cannes Film Festivals is one of the biggest events of France every year and while it is the perfect place for stars to make a fashion statement, Mallika Sherawat has chosen this platform to raise public awareness.

Mallika Sherawat is the ambassador of the NGO Free a Girl against human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children. The ‘Murder’ famed actress who walked the red carpet a day before has now locked herself up in a ‘Lock-Me-Up’ Cage at the Cannes Film Festival.

About the initiative, Mallika says, “It is my ninth year at Cannes and the festival is one of the most cogent platforms to raise the issue of child prostitution not just in India but across the world. Being locked in a cage, I wanted to drive home the imagery of how young girls who are being trafficked are trapped in a small 12×8 foot room. These innocent victims have to live and survive without any aid. There is a woman suffering abuse every minute with no hope of any change. So I thought of doing my bit and raising awareness about an issue which needs to become extinct at the earliest.”

The actress has been long known for her philanthropic attitude and her actions directed towards Women empowerment. The actress is involved with the UN and the NGO ‘Urja’ and addressed the problems faced by Indian Women at the 65th United Nations Conference.
Mallika has also promoted her campaign on Instagram and has been using hashtags @freeagirlindia #freeagirl #schoolforjustice #womensrights #supportgirls #stoprape #cannes2018 #cannesfilmfestival #cannes”. The cause is particularly for a small village in India where girls are locked up in tiny boxes and sold for prostitution.
