Suicide rate in India is increasing alarmingly, predominantly in teens. What is the major reason? It’s career pressure on the teenagers, mostly put by their families.
Apart from courses like CA, MBA, engineering, law and medical, any other career choice is not considered as a successful one. Therefore, students are often forced to take up prevailing career choices although they might want to pursue something else.
This creates a lot of pressure on them and they parade towards the ultimate step: Suicide. In order to bring about a change, Mr. Paresh Gupta, an SRCC graduate, CA and MBA (London School of Business and Finance) along with his wife, Mrs. Pooja Gupta who is a CA and a professor, founded Global College of Entrepreneurship and Commerce – the first of its kind college that provides alternative career choices like B.Com (hons) in International Accounting & B.Com (hons) in Entrepreneurship.

HOW DID YOU COME WITH THE IDEA OF INTRODUCING GCEC?
Entrepreneurship is often the last choice of a person. It’s like if they fail in their primitive career choices like CA or MBA, they would take up entrepreneurship thus beginning a start up or continuing with their family business. But it’s high time entrepreneurship as a career in looked upon right after students step out of their 12th and proper knowledge is instilled in them. Therefore, GCEC came to existence.
HOW IS GCEC DIFFERENT FROM EXISTING COLLEGES AND WHAT WILL BE YOUR COURSE DURATION?
The courses we offer, B.Com (hons) in International Accounting & B.Com (hons) in Entrepreneurship are 3 year undergraduate courses. They are structured in such a way that practical knowledge is given more weight age than theoretical learning unlike other educational institutions in Jaipur. Students will have to work for 5-6 hours daily at a startup or a company after 2 hours of classroom study. More than 40% marks will be based on their practical learning. They will be trained by best in class mentors.
WITH JAIPUR AS THE BASE, HOW DO YOU PLAN TO MAKE ENTREPRENEURS OUT OF THE STUDENTS?
Jaipur, a city of Marwaris, where people are born with business in their blood serves as the best city to begin with. The policies of the government, the ecosystem, and business in our DNA, this tier-2 city supports start ups really well. So, the students just have to be guided efficiently. And with Headstart, Startup-o Singapore, National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), CIIE SRCC as partners, students can connect with 25000+ startups across India and a number of startups across world. They will also have direct access to events organized by SRCC, Delhi. Also, we will emphasize and help students to complete their summer internships mostly from foreign universities.
TELL US ABOUT THE CHALLENGES YOU ARE FACING.
Oh! Don’t ask about the challenges, they are many! From place, infrastructure, furniture, branding, marketing to getting students, everything has been a challenge. We decided to begin GCEC pretty late. Students stopped going to the schools and it’s difficult to reach out to them now. And most of them don’t have any idea about entrepreneurship as a subject and a course as well.
