Unfortunately, a humanitarian act has faced an in-humanitarian end. Reportedly, 5 women activist had visited a village in the state of Jharkhand to perform a street play on raising awareness about Human Trafficking but ended up being prey to half a dozen of men. The women were abducted by armed men on motorcycles and then gang raped multiple times.
“The survivors said their male colleagues were beaten and made to drink their own urine before being locked up in the car. The culprits then took the survivors in the forest, gang-raped them and filmed the entire episode on their phones. The survivors said that they were held captive for four hours,” she added.
The motive behind the rape is said to be Palghati. Palghati is a practice adopted by several tribal villages in Jharkhand to declare their gram sabha as the only sovereign authority, rejecting the authority of central or state government. The men abducted the women to teach them a lesson about not propogating the government’s agenda in their village.
The abductors reportedly made videos of the incident and threatened the girls that the videos would be made viral if they disclose the incident. The DIG, however, appealed to the media to report to the police if they come across any video regarding the incident. A search party has been launched to find the criminals, some of whom have been identified.
