A recent incident from the Jalgaon district of Maharashta has come to light as two Dalit boys (aged 15 and 16) were paraded naked on the streets of the village and belted in public. The two boys were caught taking a dip in the village well and were subsequently caught by the well owner identified as Ishwar Joshi and his farm laborer Prahlad Lohar.
The matter came to light when the accused Prahlad Lohar filmed the entire incident and uploaded the video on YouTube. The video went viral on YouTube and caught the attention of the minors’ parents who filed a police report.
On the complaint of the father of one of the victims, Joshi and Lohar were booked under section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and section 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC, said the officer.
Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Keshav Pathond told PTI that Joshi and Lohar were also booked under the Atrocity Act, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and section 67 (B) of the Information and Technology Act.
Ahead of his visit, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Athawale demanded that strict action be taken against the perpetrators. He also urged people not to politicize such events but Congress was one step ahead of him as they were quick to accuse BJP for their “Anti-Dalit” attitude.
Gandhi’s efforts to establish the Dalits as Harijan seem to have gone down the drain in a country where men tape boys being beaten up and stripped naked, and political parties politicize Dalit exploitation.
